This story, like all sacred tales, is meant to be understood on a deeper, metaphorical level rather than picked apart for historical or theological accuracy. Is it true? It is true in every way it needs to be. Using fragments of the story of Lilith told by Jewish rabbis in midrashic writings, I have breathed life into this reviled woman, restoring a lost archetype of the strong woman, placing her back at the beginning where she belongs. By redeeming this archetypal understanding of what it means to be a woman, I hope to plant seeds that will keep the next generation from feeling confined by restrictive cultural or religious gender roles.
